Abbey of the Val secret

Towards 1133, a community of "Prémontrés" was installed in the enclosure of the fortress of Château-Thierry. But the place being not very good for meditation, the Count Thibaud de Champagne gave his grounds of the " Val Secret" to install the abbey there. .

Blazon of the abbey
of the Val Secret

In 1227, the Val Secret was in the center of a historical episode of the conspiracy of the barons against the King of France. The marriage of Yolande, daughter of the Duke of Brittany, with Thibaud, Count of Champagne, marriage which sealed the conspiracy, was to take place with the Secret Valley. The barons had already arrived when, on the path of Thibaud, an emissary of the king Louis IX succeeds in convincing him to give it up, which it did at once. The anger of the conspirators was terrible at the point to cause the invasion and the plundering of a part of the Champagne region.

In 1252 Thibaud king of Navarre built a " barn " near the abbey of the Val Secret whose cellar remains under the current restaurant room which was rebuilt in the 18th century.

Towards the end of the 17th century, the buildings was in such a poor way because of financial difficulties, that the abbey is obliged to require the "secular commende", kind of recovery by a laic of the load of Abbot. The reprenor on his own capital stocks and with an effective management restored the buildings in the splendour of the time.

Last misadventure of the history : at the end of the 19th century during the construction of the railway line of Château-Thierry to La Ferté Milon, the ruins of the abbey were sold as material career to build the tunnel always visible.

Terrasse Club House

There remains today only the building of the country house and the restaurant which testifies to the time of the monastic life to the Val Secret. Remain also the vestiges of the enclosure, various ponds and hydraulic work of drainage.
